About San Mateo
San Mateo County is located on a 50-mile peninsula immediately south of San Francisco and is bordered on the east by San Francisco Bay, on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the south by Santa Clara & Santa Cruz counties, encompassing 447 square miles.
San Mateo is the thirteenth largest county population in California with approximately 708,000 residents.The climate consists of sunshine and mild temperatures. Average annual temperature is a pleasant 68 degrees (summer highs rarely over 78 degrees and winter lows in the mid-50s). Average rainfall is approximately 20 inches per year, occurring primarily from December to March.
 
San Mateo County can proudly boast of possessing one of the state's most beautiful and interesting coastlines. We recommend that visitors spend a few days exploring the historic landmarks and picturesque scenery of the San Mateo coastside. The area is laden with a number of beautiful hotels and charming bed-and-breakfast inns to make your visit to the "Coastside" a truly relaxing and memorable occasion.Off Highways 280 or 101, head west on Highway 92 toward the gorgeous San Mateo County coast. The Coastside towns (along Highway 1) — Half Moon Bay, San Gregorio, Pescadero, Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada, Princeton, Miramar, La Honda — offer a rich history of Native American and European settlers, agricultural development and bootlegging. Historical sites include Johnston House, Greek Revival Building, San Gregorio Store, Half Moon Bay Jail, Pescadero Community Church, Zaballa House, Moss Beach Distillery and more. SAN MATEO COUNTY HISTORY MUSEUM The Museum features exhibits depicting the history of the Peninsula through the times of the Ohlone Indians, the Spanish explorers, the ranchos, pioneer logging, agriculture, dairy farms, whaling, and the Victorian era of great estates. FOX THEATRE which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Although used mostly for motion pictures, the theatre had a stage for Vaudeville and a pipe organ. In the 1950's, the theatre underwent extensive remodeling, especially the auditorium which was re-done in the art-deco style typical of many movie houses. 2215 Broadway Avenue, Redwood City. COYOTE POINT MUSEUM FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION This delightful museum offers environmental exhibits in addition to aquariums, computers, games, films and a wildlife habitat which features native Bay Area live animals, birds and plants. PULGAS WATER TEMPLE Modeled after temples erected near canals and waterways by the ancient Greeks, the Pulgas Water Temple was built in 1938 to commemorate the completion of the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct.
