Invitation:

TDI invites proposals for keynote speeches, workshops, presentations, forums, and panel discussions for the 16th Biennial TDI International Conference, July 11 - 13, 2005 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Conference Program Co-Chairs Tom Driscoll and Fred Weiner invite you to be a part of history, as we create an outstanding showcase of talented, exemplary leaders to take an active role at the upcoming TDI Conference.


Conference Theme:

"Access Today!  Big Easy Tomorrow…"


Proposal Deadline:

Postmarked mail or email submission by:
         Friday, April 1, 2005


Proposal Format:

1. A written proposal no more than 500 words on the topic
    and participants.
2. An abstract of approximately 50 words describing the
    topic/session. 
3. A one-to-two paragraph biographic sketch about each
    presenter. 
4. Presentations will be 60-90 minutes in length.
5. The anticipated audience will consist of deaf, hard of
     hearing, and hearing people from the telecommunications,
     media and technology fields.
6. TDI is looking for:

  • Workshop presenters (interactive with audience)

  • Plenary or panel presenters (Q&A session at end)

  • Research panel facilitators and panelists

  • International panel facilitators and panelists

  • Debate facilitators and participants

  • Forum / discussion circle / focus group research
    or information gathering sessions with industry and/or
    government agencies and consumers

  • Technological Wish-list panel facilitator and panelists

  • Vendor demonstration sessions


Presentation Topics:

These should address the conference theme.  All presentations must address the needs of TDI's four constituency groups: Deaf, Late-Deafened, Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf-Blind.  Suggested topics include:

• Telecommunications Access

TRS, Consumer Choice, IP-Relay, VRS, IVR Access, Equipment Distribution Programs, Funding Mechanisms, Wireless systems, Impact of VoIP technologies, cell phones, text pagers, PDAs, hearing aid compatibility, Long distance access - how to choose the best plan, 7-1-1 TRS, 4-1-1 pre-subscription - trends and realities, Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act implementation factors and successes, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act implementation factors and successes, Wireless Telecommunication Technologies, Industry Standards

• The Internet

Internet 2, Instant Messaging, PDA capabilities, Utilization of remote learning, Video Conferencing, Internet software programs, multimedia content and other applications that include accessibility, Educational applications/potential development of new programs and products

• Captioning

Captioning technologies and their application in all forms of media - analog or digital, FCC's captioning rules; enforcement issues; impact on service quality, Quality issues with local news and real-time captioning, HDTV gaps, movie theaters, home videos.

• Video Technology

Video Relay, Access to workplace videoconferences, Video/text chat technology

• Emergency Access

911 Service experiences, training, and other issues, Emergency Captioning Requirements for Broadcasters, Tornado warning systems; emergency preparation; Reverse 911; smart pagers for receiving alerts based on location; NOAA Weather Radios.

• Voice Recognition Applications

Speech to text applications that bring improved access, automatic speech recognition

• Enhanced Sound Quality Issues

Meeting room access; classroom acoustic standards, standards for assistive listening technology; sound systems

• Other Access Issues Related to:

o Courts and other Public Facilities
o Hospitality & Travel Industry 
o Highways and Public Transportation
o Local & State Government Services

Regretfully, TDI is unable to offer honorarium and/or reimbursement for travel expenses.  Presenters will be responsible for all expenses including registration and combo ticket.

If selected, please be prepared to submit within two weeks of selection unless otherwise noted:
